now lets try reading the title in reverse , have we ever spared a thought for food , no im not talking about the craving for mouth watering delicacies here , im talking about the effort taken for the hot meal ready on our plates,
the impact our diet has on the ecosystem , i ve been subject to pangs of guilt for being a non vegetarian myself, here s why we should focus on eating a more balanced diet, it takes far greater resources for feeding a non vegetarian than a vegan, cattle are being fattened up on grain that could have directly supported hungry mouths , so there is a greater strain on the ecosystem in terms of water usage and fodder crop, there s another problem as well, cattle in general are known to emit large amounts of methane , this happens as a byproduct of cellulase metabolism, this methane is far more potent at causing the green house effect than plain co2 ,
we are fortunate to have such a large variety of stuff to munch into , our grandparents didnt get to eat this sort of wonderfull varied kinds of foodstuff , but wait a minute they are the ones who are better off , because they ate foodstuff that was grown with organic manure , what are we eating , well recently so many people were expressing their concern on the safety of gm crops, they say that the crops might be toxic, well have we paid any attention to the sorts of fertilizer and toxic pesticides that are being used, these toxic materials find their way in to the food chain somehow
there s yet another problem , we got too many mouths to feed in our country and too little space to do it, add to it the unpredictable monsoons causing droughts and floods , and people who want to grab agricultural land for their fancy projects , we really have to salute our poor farmers , people who give so much and yet get next to nothing in return , next time we enjoy a hearty meal lets spare a thought for the poor souls who grew our food with their blood and sweat
